It must be spring – just ordered some seeds! Trying for round two of a shade garden: last year I broke my foot on April 1st, so I actually haven’t tried growing anything out back our apartment in the spring/summer season. I’m hoping it will get marginally more dappled shade and perhaps produce some edibles. I’m also throwing in some other plants just because its ugly as sin back there. I don’t know why I care, since we’re never going to hang out back there and I can’t even see it from my window (can you tell I have issues with our apartment?) but I am a good citizen, I suppose. I’m more excited about the bird feeder I’m going to create this weekend – better chance of seeing something from the window that way. I’ll be visiting a local greenwaste company for some free compost and probably spending more than I should on some shade plants such as hostas and ferns this weekend. (Maybe at Flowercraft?) Here are the seeds I ordered and look forward to starting under the grow light soon:
- Shiso
- Mixed greens
- Archangel (Lamium)
- Sweet Woodruff (Gallium odoratum)
- Climbing nasturtiums (I’ve spotted these growing under dense and foggy eucalypti groves on San Bruno mountain, so I hope they will grow here)
- Onions
- Beets
- Peas (for shoots – these grew great last year – REDUX)
- Joe Pye Weed
- Irish Moss aka Baby’s Tears (ew)
- Chard
- Watercress (betting on this one)
